Mindfulness of the Heart

A six week meditation course

Led by Peter Fernando

Wednesdays, 7:30-9:00pm
November 16, to December 21, 2016

Pa Maria, Thorndon

In the original teachings of the Buddha, the third and most transformative foundation of mindfulness is called ‘Mindfulness of the Heart’. This foundation of inquiry is the basis for all the insight practices that since evolved in the myriad Buddhist schools over the ages.
As opposed to being an idealistic philosophy, or merely a set of cognitive techniques, mindfulness of the heart involves our direct and undivided attention to states of being and energies of heart/mind, just as they are. The practice opens us into the possibility of a present moment engagement with our inner life, free of judgement or repressive reactions.
This approach to inquiry strips bare the workings of the mind, underneath its habitual stories, and allows us to contact the raw experience of the human heart as it arises, moves us, and ceases, in the present moment. Through this practice we begin to sense a foundation of refuge in our own being, which can intuit cause and effect, suffering and ease, in an uncontrived and authentic way.
In this course, we will explore the many different ways of strengthening this crucial foundation of mindfulness, and contemplate the qualities of being necessary for its cultivation.
Topics will include:
  • An all-embracing approach to our human nature
  • Exploring the radical phenomenology of the Buddha’s insight teachings
  • Finding Joy, life-energy and flow through presence with heart states
  • Transforming turbulent emotions
  • Balancing vulnerability and strength of presence
  • Trusting in the undivided nature of awareness

Cost: $120 (unwaged places always available)
